  • Met a lot of very nice people along the way and it's definitely a very good way to dive into the culture if you're with the locals. We had a great time as a group and have seen a lot of Vietnam. Chen did a great job guiding us around and I'm looking forward to my next G Adventures Tour.

Frequently asked questions

  • What currency should I use and what should I know about money exchange?

The local currency is Vietnamese Dong. Exchange rates fluctuate, so check current rates online. It's best to carry debit cards for ATM withdrawals (Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, but bring both for backup). USD cash is recommended for emergencies when ATMs are unavailable. Be aware that banks charge fees for overseas withdrawals. Ensure USD notes are new and in good condition.
  • Are there any considerations for traveling during Vietnamese Lunar New Year (Tết)?

During January/February, Tết sees millions of Vietnamese travel to be with families. While fascinating, transport availability may lead to replacing overnight trains with overnight buses.
  • Are there any special notes about accommodation in specific cities?

In some major cities in Vietnam, many hotel rooms do not have windows.
  • Are there any specific warnings or safety advice for traveling in Vietnam?

Be aware that petty theft can be an issue, especially at night, often by individuals on motorbikes snatching bags. Always leave valuables and passports in hotel safety deposit boxes and carry only essential cash. Carry bags over the neck. Avoid protests or demonstrations, and use good judgment for optional activities, especially water-based ones, participating only when accompanied by a guide.
  • What is Planeterra?

Planeterra International Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating positive impact through travel. They connect underserved local communities to tourism benefits by developing and supporting small community-owned businesses, empowering indigenous people, women, and youth, and protecting the environment. The tour operator is Planeterra’s largest corporate donor.
  • What should LGBTQ+ travelers know about safety and travel considerations on this trip?

The safety and well-being of all travelers, including those who identify as LGBTQ+, is a priority. We encourage you to visit the tour operator's LGBTQ+ page for useful resources and to utilize tools like Equaldex for destination-specific information to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
  • Who will be leading the group during the tour?

All group trips are accompanied by a Chief Experience Officer (CEO). Their role is to provide information, suggest activities, recommend local eateries, and introduce you to local contacts. Local guides are also employed for more specific knowledge at various sites.

  • How should I dress to respect local customs during the tour?

Dress standards in Asia are more conservative. Pack loose, lightweight, long clothing suitable for hot and humid climates. When visiting temples or holy sites, dress respectfully, avoiding very short shorts/skirts and singlets/tank tops.
  • What health considerations should I be aware of before traveling?

Inoculations may be required; consult your travel doctor well before departure. It's recommended to carry a First Aid kit and hand sanitizers. Be aware that medical facilities might be remote, and leaders cannot administer drugs. Pharmacies in Asia tend to stock the same Western drugs as you get at home but they are usually produced locally, so bring the full drug name when trying to purchase a prescription drug.
  • What are the tipping customs in Vietnam?

Tipping service providers like waiters is customary in Asia, approximately 10%. For local guides or drivers, recommendations range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day. A tip of $20-25 USD per person per week is appreciated for your Chief Experience Officer (CEO).
